How to apply The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson to your Digital Media Marketing

Hey, this is Darrell Stern, reporting live from the offices of Stern Storming, here in amazing Denver, Colorado. I have some news, some updates, and some philosophical changes that I’m making that I wanted to share with you. I also wanted to invite you to join me in this journey that I’m on to take the slight edge, to make small adjustments that are actually quite mundane in your life that are actually going to change it all around.

The inspiration for this, by the way, is this book that I’m telling you is a must-read. It is called The Slight Edge. It is by Jeff Olson. Go get it. I’m just telling you to go get it. In the book, one of the things that Mr. Olson talks about is he’s in the airport and he sees a lady that is shining shoes. He decides, okay, I’m going to shine shoes, right? I’m going to get my shoes shined. While he’s getting his shoes shined, he hears that this lady loves her kids, wants her daughter to go to cheerleading camp, doesn’t have the money for it, is really worried. Behind the lady is a stack of books. The books are like romance novels, sci-fi, like just good, nice reading to pass the time, right, but not really anything that’s doing anything for her life.

All of a sudden he thinks to himself, “What if?” In other words, what if there was something we could do to make a small change, to give this lady a slight edge. He said, “What if the lady were able to change those books around and read things like Think and Grow Rich, or The Slight Edge, right, or whoops, or the One-Minute Millionaire?” I just dropped the book. In other words, the lady is already reading, right? She’s already reading every day, just to pass the time at her shoeshine job, right? Well, what if instead of just reading junk books, right, she started to read amazing business books, right? Like amazing books that would help herself grow in her business. Maybe she would one day all of a sudden own a whole chain of shoe shine places, like in every airport of the country.

A lot of us think of that thing that we should change a little bit.  A lot of people think of that, the one little thing that we could change, right? But we don’t actually do it. And it’s funny. There’s this thing, there’s the top 5% of all human beings, the top 5%, that for whatever reason, it’s not just financial. We’re not just talking about billionaires and stuff like that. But these top 5% of people are achieving everything they could possibly want to achieve. They’re achieving beyond their wildest streams. They’re just achieving. We all think that there’s some kind of big, epic secret or formula or we’ve got to do all this training and change our lives drastically. But that’s the point. You don’t. You just have to make this slight edge, this little, little tiny adjustment.

For instance, in digital marketing, I wanted to apply this to digital marketing, okay? So what if you’re blogging, right? You’re writing these articles, you’re writing these articles, you’re writing these articles, but you are not making the title of the article a question. Or you’re not just adding a little bit of tags at the end or doing a little interlinking in your keywords. You’re already doing it, right? You’re already putting out blogs. You’re already doing this, right? But you’re just not making that small, little, tiny, mundane adjustment, and all you need is a little bit of help and training, just to make that slight edge, just to shift it a little bit, just to do two more extra things in every post that you make, right? What if there was a way that you could take a six-step process and do a video on your phone every day and post it to Facebook then LinkedIn then Twitter, right, and put in tags and put just a simple little thing that you’re not doing every day that could all of a sudden start to grow your experiences, grow your profits, grow your influence. All this stuff about an influencer is just people that are being consistent with sharing their voice and sharing their experience and all that.

I definitely want to do some one-on-one time with each and every one of you that I haven’t yet, just to take a look at what you’re doing and see if there’s that slight edge, see if there’s slight, the little adjustment that you’re just not quite doing. A lot of this on Facebook, there are things that you could tag. There are hashtags that you put into your post. You’re not sharing your own posts with your personal wall. There’s someone is asking you about your business and you’re saying, “Yeah, go look at my website,” instead of engaging with them and talking with them. You’re not in sales answering a question with a question. Like little, little, itty bitty things that if you just learned and made a slight adjustment, you would be able to do that.

So thank you. This is a little Stern Storming moment, and I will see you guys later.
